Engineering Tech III Digital Portfolio
Heading
Hi, my name is David Simonson. I am a Junior at Nature Coast Technical High School. I am in the Engineering 3 class and that is why I made this website. For our final exam grade we have to make a digital portfolio aka a website. Well that's about it. Email me if you have any questions.
Portfolio - activity tasks, team activities, forums
Forum 1:
Everyday we use technology. Define in your own words what is technology. Give your definition and three to five (3-5) supporting details or examples.
I believe that technology is anything we use or create today. We wake up, take a shower which uses energy, make breakfast that uses electricity, then go to work or school in a car which uses gasoline. Everything we do we are using technology.
Forum 2:
Now that we have discussed the definition of technology, and we better understand what the difference between a system and a technological system is, be prepared to discuss the history of technology. Research four (4) major epochs of technology (hint: they are not the same as regular history epochs) and outline the forces that changed the technology. Remember the three (3) factors that shape technological change we discussed in class.
4 epochs of technology are the computer, the motor vehicle, satellite, and the rocket ship. The computer was important because it helped people to stay in touch without phones and many other reasons, the motor vehicle was important because it helped people to get places ten times faster, the satellite was important because it helped us research and study other planets and stuff millions of miles away, and the rocket ship helped us study near planets and land people on them.
Forum 3:
As we relate what we do in class to the world of work, and as we gear up for our first project together, it makes sense for us to look at the skills required to become a successful employee. Find four (4) skills needed to work as an Engineer and define them. Provide good examples of how these skills are useful. Also include how one would obtain these skills.
4 skills that engineer must have are quick learning, responsibility, math skills, and computer skills. Quick learning because they have to be able to adapt in there environment and make quick good decisions, responsibility because you have to be responsible to keep your job, math skills because most engineering jobs require alot of math, and computer skills because all engineering jobs require the use of the computer.
Forum 4:
The three (3) factors we discussd over the last few classes lead us to understand what changes technology and drives innovation. Define a technological innovation you have personally witnessed. Be sure to provide examples and how it is considered an innovation.
Technology changes and has innovations everyday. Like the Sony Playstation. There was the playstation 1, the playstation 2, and now the playstation 3.
Forum 5:
As we begin to operate our business, we need to focus our energy on whole systems thinking. Define the basics of an Engineering Team. Create a flowchart or diagram that shows the relationship of your understanding of what a team does.
An engineering team needs many things to work well but there are a few that are crucial. Like any team it needs teamwork, a leader, and everyone to communicate well together.
Forum 6:
Goal setting is important for becoming a successful student. Discuss three (3) individual goals you want to complete this semester. Give specific examples as to how you will accomplish these goals.
3 goals I want to complete this semester are complete all my modules, build a robot, and get an A in this class.
Forum 7:
The biggest difference between people is the attitude they choose. Everyday we are confronted by choosing our attitude and thinking positively. What are some ways we can build positive thinking in our class? What are you going to do to change the way you think?
There are many ways to change the way you think. One is stopping and thinking before you speak. It will keep you out of trouble and make your thoughts alot more clear. What I am going to do to change the way I think is I am going to take more time to think and not just make decisions and assessments off the top of my head.
Forum 8:
Building learning habits is paramount to becoming successful as a student. What are the steps to building a habit? How do you plan to build better study habits, note taking habits, and test taking habits?
You dont really have any steps to building a habit. You just have to do it everyday and it will become natural to you. For note taking habits you must 1st make sure you are taking notes the right way then make it a habit. For test taking habits you do the same thing. Use test taking skills and form it into a habit.
Forum 9:
As a student you are afforded certain rights and you have certain responsibilities that you must fulfill. What are some of these rights? What are some of these responsibilities? Describe each and give a specific example of how these impact you as a student.
We have many rights and responsibilities as a student ,but adults have even more. Our rights as a student are really whatever rights our parents and authorities give us. Some of our responsibilities as a student are school sports and family.
Forum 10:
Good time management means defining priorities and scheduling activities. Define a strategy you plan to use to become a better manager of your time. What are some tools you will use to help you to manage your time better? How is this going to effect your becoming a better student?
Time management is very important. If I wanted to better manage my time I would use a calender and put into it all my important dates and times. That way I would know what and when I am doing.
Forum 11:
We all read some type of publications each day. What we read is usually what interests us. As we prepare to create success for ourselves on the FCAT, be sure to understand the following: the main idea, author's intent, and tone. Define each of these and briefly describe them. Be sure to write in complete sentences.
The main idea is the main reason the story was written. The author's intention is the point that the author wants for his story to get across. The tone is any sound considered with reference to its quality, pitch, strength,or source.
Forum 12:
As we generate newer technologies, the world changes and so do the problems. What are some ways you use math, science, and technology everyday? Define the situation and explain it. Be sure to answer in complete sentences.
We use math, science, and technology everyday. I use math when I buy something and need to determine how much I give and how much I get back. I use science everyday to determine the weather to determine what to wear that day. I use technology everyday because most of my work and homework for school is on thwe computer.
Forum 13:
"We all use numbers everyday." from the hit show Numb3rs on CBS. What type of math do you use everyday? Define some of the things you use math for. Be sure to write the definitions in complete sentences.
I use math everyday. One of the most obvious places I use math is in math class. Another class I use alot of math for is in engineering and drafting. I also use math when I buy something or sell something so I know the exact change.
Forum 14:
What is a portfolio? What are the artifacts you have collected? How do you present a portfolio and make it meaningful? Describe how you plan to present your portfolio to the class, the school and the world.
A portfolio is something you keep materials of stuff you have done to keep track of them. It's really just for organization. I have collected all my forums I have done and anything else I have done that's important. To present a portfolio presentation meaningful you must not read right off the board or computer and make sure you know what your talking about.
Forum 15:
What is success? How do we define success? Use your understanding of what we have been doing the last nine weeks and define on your own what is success. Be sure to include what you plan to do to become successful.
Success is what you gain from your efforts put forth into it. Over these past nine weeks I feel I have had success considering I finished and passed my module with an "A" and done all my forums and daily work.
Forum 16:
Engineers must be able to make decisions, provide for documentation for their decisions, and critically analyze the data they collect. What is critical thinking? Define the term and give some examples of how this works. Be sure to use complete sentences.
All engineers must be able to make quick thinking decisions. It's the ones that are able to make the correct decisions that accomplish the most in there career and make the most money.
Forum 17:
We use science as a daily skill, but hardly ever notice we do. It has become an innate skill. Define an example when you use science. Be sure to provide examples and specifics. Answer in complete sentences.
We use science in many different ways for many different things. When you decide what to wear you have to see what the temperature is to decide what to wear that day which they use science to figure that out. Any inventions made these days used some kind of science.
Forum 18:
As we begin our second project, which is a team project, we need to identify what a team is and does. Be sure to assign roles, create criteria for evaluating each other, and make a task list for everyday jobs. Be sure to create a calendar for your team. Define what an Engineering team does. Give examples from project #2 for your entry.
Team is everything when your doing a big engineering project. If there is no teamwork then the project wont get completed or it will get completed but wrongly.
Forum 19There is a certain process to problem solving with 6 steps to it. 1 problem definition, 2 problem analysis, 3 generating possible solutions, 4 analyzing the solutions, 5 selecting the best solutions, 6 planning the next course of action.
Forum 22
What is Whole systems thinking? How do we "program" ourselves to think using systems thinking logi (if, then)? Define a typical system and give specific examples.Forum 23
A successful team has to be willing to utilize each members strengths and focus not on their respective weaknesses. Each member of the team needs to be responsible for contributing, and for communication of their ideas. No ideas are dumb ideas, and working together is paramount for sucess. Define your teams forming, norming, and storming attributes. Be sure to collect artifacts (the chart you make) and reference Chapter 2 in the text Design Tools for Engineering Teams.Forum 24
As we use technology, we have to weigh the balances as to how these technologies affect our everyday lives. Define some of the technologies you use and how they affect the world around you. Be sure to define the positive and negative effects of this technology usage.Forum 25
The use of technology has positive and negative effects. What impacts does the technology you use everyday have on the environment, society, and the global economy? List some of the technologies you use and how they impact each of these. Be mindful of the rest of the world and how little they utilize technology to be happy, healthy, and to survive.

Instructor - safety test, notes, documents
At the beginning of the year everybody had to take a safety test to determine if you were smart enough and responsible enough to use the equipment. If you fail it you get dropped from the class automatically. Towards the beginning of the year we were doin group rotations where we rotate stations for modules, teaching, and projects. We stoped doing it when we got into the bigger projects. When we had the teaching station Mr. Kinkaid would talk to us about different things in the engineering field and we had to take notes about it.
Module - pre tests, post tests, drawings, artifacts
Each quarter this year we had to have 1 module done. Before each module we had to take a pre test. If we pass it we pass the module ,but if not we have to take it. You have to get an 80 or higher to pass. At the end of each lesson we have to take a review. Then at the end of the module we take the post test. It determines if we pass the module or not. You have to get a 70 or higher to pass it.
